False Milkweed Bug (Lygaeus turcicus)
Fabricius, 1803 |
Synonyms: Lygaeus trimaculatus |
Lygaeus turcicus occurs in eastern North America, mostly in the northeastern United States and the adjacent Canada. It is found in wooded areas, prairie remnants, along roadsides, etc. This species is dull red and black, with a large Y-shaped reddish mark between the eyes that extends between the antennal bases, and dark hemelytran membrane without white edges or spots. L. turcicus feeds on seeds of False Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides), and perhaps other Asteraceae.
